i've been going to schreiner's since i was a kid so i might be biased but this place is the best of both worlds. a deli and a restaurant in one. you can purchase your meat supply and then sit down for a bite to eat. their sandwiches are awesome. i always get black forest ham on a baguette with american cheese and pickles. sounds simple but i really don't think i could ever make a sandwich taste that good. next time i'm there, i'll have to try the beer.
Wow! This place is totally authentic. They have a very extensive selection of meats and specialty products. Service was exceptionally professional and courteous. And the prices were more than reasonable. I would recommend this place to anyone!
Holy Schreiner! Staff dressed in dirndles, a market filled with fresh deli meats, rare German novelties, along with German beer? Schreiner's Fine Sausages is nestled in an alley in Montrose/Verdugo (oh what?).
Even though the few reviews here rave about the deli sandwiches, I don't think it's quite the star of this wurst establishment. The market side is much more impressive! It's tiny, but filled with common products (but rare here) of Germany: beverages, pastries, HAIR/SKIN PRODUCTS, candies, and of course a variety of fresh deli meats.
I've tried their deli sandwiches and I appreciate their use of fresh cuts of meat, but it's no spectacular sandwich. I would very much love to come here and pick out salamis, smoked sausages, and a couple of beers and take it to a picnic or BBQ.
They have designated dates for BBQ Smoke-outs. Definitely need to check that out next time around!
How is it that I've never been here before? I go to other Montrose restaurants nearby. I ducked in for a quick lunch the other day. It's an old school kind of deli with very friendly staff and an attractive selection of deli meats, cheeses and more. I had the best ham on rye in my life, and I don't even like rye bread. But I liked it here. The best sandwich bread I've ever had. So fresh, so good. Simple and thoroughly enjoyable. Nice tables and umbrellas outside, too. Highly recommend.
I'll get straight to the point...it's changed, but clearly for the worst. The atmosphere is gone...no interaction with your sandwich maker, no cans of soda, no cozy seating area amongst a variety of wine bottles, but worst of all, the food isn't as good as years gone by. The crust on the French roll was soft and the ham on my sandwich was actually SHREDDED, not sliced. It's all sterile now, just like your garden variety subway sandwich shop...very sad, just take a number and get in line. I knew something was wrong when I saw a sign out front advertising for hot wings and chicken breast...puh-leese, don't cheapen what was an outstanding example of success based upon that rare combination of outstanding service with outstanding food. I plan on giving it one more try, but if I get the same experience I will sadly end my relationship with Schreiner's that has lasted for over 35 years.
Good Grief ! I spent time in Germany when in the Army, and THIS place is NOT CLOSE to authentic. My wife and I drove 80 miles on our motorcycle today to have lunch here. I asked to have two different meats on my sandwich - I got two, paid for three. I asked for a side of German potato salad, paid for it, didn't get it. The manager said I didn't pay for it. So I paid for it after receiving my sandwiches. Now, that I'm home and typing this, I looked at my convoluted receipt, and saw that I did in fact pay for the potato on my original receipt,..and then again on a separate receipt.. My wife asked for swiss cheese on her sandwich, again, paid for it, didn't get it. The potato salad tasted like vinegar, both sandwiches were dry, dry, dry. Choice of bread for sandwich ( "french' roll, or rye -- that's it ! ) I asked for rye and was charged 40 cents extra. Swss cheese (that we didn't get) = 40 cents extra. Topping on the cake = after eating 1/2 of each of sandwiches, I asked for the men's room. THEY DON'T HAVE ONE. The manager said, "our building is old enough, that we aren't "required" to have any rest rooms. Bad enough they have dining inside their establishment and NO restrooms; but the key words here are - "we're not REQUIRED", so they DON'T FEEL ANY NEED to provide for their customers comfort either. This experience was terrible. I'll never go back. Terrible food, terrible service, terrible attitudes, and now I find they even cheated more than I first realized. Forget this place.
Wow, apparently Schreiner's serves sandwiches and they bbq on the weekend? I had no idea! Thanks, Yelp!
I just came here to review the deli -- I pick up fresh bratwursts here on a monthly basis. They are seriously DELICIOUS. I bring them home, pop them in a beer bath and then grill them. They are some of the best brats I have ever had.
The bacon is also phenomenal. It crisps up paper thin, which is how I love it. If you want meaty bacon, this isn't it.
I also love the wall of German sauces & condiments. The curry ketchup is tasty!
Considering my dad is German, like German German, Schreiner's reminds me of my childhood. Weekend visits to this local German deli was a regular thing growing up. I can even remember the bologna samples they offered my sister and me when we were kids.

This place is THE BEST for German charcuterie.
GIANT ham hocks, cute old ladies in Germanic costumes, good German beer, candy, and condiment selection. Excellent super fresh pork products too.
Ich liebe dich Schreiner's!

Yay for childhood memories.
